Cummins R2.8 Crate Engine Breaks New Ground

This is the engine launch that 4WD off-road enthusiasts have been waiting for. Cummins R2.8 Turbo Diesel crate engine can now be purchased exclusively at www.cumminsrepower.com.  This four-cylinder turbocharged diesel was developed off a platform used globally in small pickups, chassis cabs, SUVs and more – adapted specifically for customers seeking to replace the original gasoline engine in their 4WD vehicle with a more powerful, higher-torque, range-extending diesel.

“It’s been nearly a year since we first announced the crate engine program, Cummins Repower, and the response and anticipation from enthusiasts has been overwhelming,” said Stephen Sanders, Program Leader – Cummins Repower. “Our team has performed extensive work to ensure this product meets the tremendous expectations of our customers. We are excited to finally bring more high quality Cummins power and dependability to a new group of consumers.”

Output for the R2.8 has been initially set at 161 hp at 3600 rpm, with peak torque of 267 lb-ft from 1500-3000 rpm. Engine weight is pegged at just over 500 lb. The compact size – 28.3” high by 25” wide by 25.1” deep – makes it ideal for replacing original gasoline-powered engines in Jeeps®, Land Rovers®, Ford Broncos and other 4WD vehicles.

The R2.8 comes complete with an installation kit (PN 5467046) that includes the accessories critical to a successful repower. This includes the complete front-end accessory drive all the way to the throttle pedal and dashboard display, with all of the wiring needed in between. Here’s what the kit includes:

  • Complete front-end accessory drive (alternator, power steering pump, fan hub, serpentine belt)
  • Cam-driven vacuum pump
  • Remote fuel filter/water separator
  • Remote oil filter
  • Mass airflow sensor and housing
  • Engine wiring harness and Electronic Control Module (ECM)
  • Starter
  • Flywheel
  • Universal vehicle wiring harness
  • Throttle pedal
  • J1939 CAN dash display
  • Owner’s Manual
  • Installation guide
  • Cummins QuickServe Online (QSOL) access
  • Emissions testing information

The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the Cummins R2.8 crate engine is $8,999 U.S. with orders starting to ship from Columbus, Indiana to customers this month. There are a couple of regions where direct to consumer sales are currently prohibited due to local laws, including the state of Texas and province of Quebec.  Cummins is working with authorities to ease these restrictions and make the R2.8 available to everyone as quickly as possible.

The R2.8 Turbo Diesel is the first in a series of brand new crate engines that Cummins will market directly to the consumer under the Cummins Repower program. For additional details about Cummins Repower engines and the R2.8 Turbo Diesel, visit cumminsengines.com/repower.
