New Advantage When Spec’ing a SmartAdvantage™ Powertrain

Cummins new interactive SmartAdvantage Powertrain Selection Guide helps customize the spec’ing of your customers’ vehicles equipped with the SmartAdvantage Powertrain. Because the ISX15 SmartAdvantage Powertrain is the only integrated powertrain to offer the choice of direct drive or small-step overdrive transmission, it is important that your customers choose the best option for their operation. This automated guide helps them make the correct choice, and maximize fuel economy.

This simple six-question program helps determine the ideal SmartAdvantage Powertrain spec based on the duty cycle of the vehicle. The program is mobile-friendly, so anyone can use it even when not at the office. Results are easily shared among the sales staff, customers, dealers and distributors.

To begin, all your customers need to do is identify broad guidelines for these six parameters:

  1. Target cruising speed
  2. Road type
  3. Terrain
  4. Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)
  5. Frequency of stops
  6. Tire revolutions per mile

Based on this input, the user will receive recommendations that include top gear ratio, horsepower, torque rating and axle ratio. This information can then be input into PowerSpec,™ which will determine the impact on operation with factors such as startability, gradeability at cruise and gradeability in top gear. This allows your customers to choose the optimal spec for their vehicle.

There are a couple of great aspects to this new tool. First, it allows the user to go back and change selections at any point in the process. Second, it provides guidance for customers who want all the benefits of the SmartAdvantage Powertrain but may not fall within normal spec’ing guidelines (i.e., a heavy-haul customer with loads in excess of 80,000 lb).

If you have a customer who runs routes across a variety of terrains or with loads that have vastly different GVW, this tool can quickly (within minutes) provide the different configurations that optimize the desired balance of fuel economy and performance. Together, the SmartAdvantage Selection Guide, in combination with PowerSpec, can help you provide customers with a finely tuned spec that meets customer needs and expectations, and share that information easily with everyone involved in the purchase and spec’ing process.
