Drive More Efficiently Using ADEPT™ With SmartCoast™

ADEPT is a suite of advanced electronic features for the ISX15 that interact with automated manual transmissions, continuously making minor adjustments to speed, power and transmission gear to take advantage of vehicle momentum, maximizing efficiency and increasing fuel economy. The first package includes SmartTorque2 (ST2) and optional SmartCoast technology, and has the capability of increasing your customers’ fuel efficiency by up to 3 percent in today’s powertrains using automated manual transmissions (AMTs). The greatest gains will be on vehicles running across rolling terrain.

ST2 is the next generation of torque management technology from Cummins, introduced on the SmartAdvantage™ Powertrain. It senses both the selected gear and overall engine load, taking into account gross vehicle weight (GVW), aerodynamic drag and road grade. As these conditions vary, ST2 determines the exact amount of torque needed to maintain road speed and eliminate unnecessary downshifts. This ensures steadier engine operation with more time spent in the “sweet spot” – the rpm range that achieves the best fuel economy.

When a vehicle is ordered with SmartCoast, the engine and transmission work in concert to improve efficiency on moderate downhills. SmartCoast disengages the driveline, allowing the engine to return to idle. Reducing drag on the driveline conserves vehicle momentum and improves fuel economy.

Seeing the tach drop to 600 rpm might initially cause drivers some concern. They need to understand that SmartCoast is programmed to automatically re-engage the driveline whenever the grade exceeds 4 percent or the vehicle approaches the lower droop limit (factory-set at +6 mph). At that point, the Intebrake™ system kicks in to provide necessary braking power to maintain that exact road speed.

The driver of one of the Redefining Tour trucks running a 2017 ISX15 engine noted, “Initially, I wasn’t sure what to expect. After a while, I got comfortable and just ran on cruise control. Coming up to a hill, it climbs at the right speed, and it coasts back down at the right speed. I felt completely in control without the stress of figuring out what I need to do to maintain speed.”

Looking ahead, ADEPT features currently in development will allow your engine to take information from GPS systems, combine it with “look-ahead” terrain-recognition software and dynamically make speed and torque adjustments in advance of changes in the road grade, enabling further fuel savings. Your customers will be able to easily upgrade ADEPT in the future to take advantage of new features.
