New Aftertreatment System Takes Up 60% Less Space

Single Module AfterTreatment 300 pxAs U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resource Board (ARB) standards have evolved, a combination of technologies has been used to reduce emissions to near-zero levels of particulate matter (PM) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Over the years, we’ve implemented a number of technologies to meet the regulations, each requiring space on the chassis; however, recent technological advancements allow us to deliver a more compact system to fit on your application.

At Cummins, customer focus, innovation and collaboration with our partners are paramount. Feedback from you and your customers was a key input into the design of Cummins Emission Solutions Single Module system, which contains the catalysts, Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) doser, mixer and filtration elements, reducing the size of the system by up to 60 percent and its weight by up to 40 percent versus the current combination of a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology in the Cummins aftertreatment system.

In addition to being smaller, lighter and easier to install, the straight flow-through system optimizes air flow and overall efficiency across the system. Advancements in catalyst technologies have yielded a greater ash capacity, so the system can go farther between scheduled maintenance (cleanings).

Of course, a key fact that your customers need to know about the Single Module aftertreatment system is that it is next-generation technology that is allowing Cummins engineers to optimize engine fuel economy and performance to an even greater degree than current engine models. The smaller size enables better heat management for improved fuel economy, while the single-pass design reduces backpressure for improved performance, resulting in a more efficient engine system

The 2017 Single Module aftertreatment system is installed on two of the Cummins Redefining Tour fleet units, and is being tested every day. You can see the new Single Module aftertreatment system from Cummins Emission Solutions by visiting a Redefining Tour stop this summer. Additional information is available at
