Today’s Trucking Test Drives the Cummins and Eaton® ISX15 SmartAdvantage™ Powertrain

The fully integrated SmartAdvantage Powertrain promises customers a lot of benefits, including 3% to 6% better fuel economy, and according to a test-drive article featured in Today’s Trucking by Jim Park, it not only delivers – it “shines.”

The article covers a full day of Park driving a brand-new Class 8 truck powered by a Cummins ISX15 rated at 450 hp. It utilizes SmartTorque2 (ST2) technology and an Eaton Fuller® Advantage® Series transmission with narrow gear-ratio steps. The integration of variable torque levels with more narrow step gearing results in smoother performance and more time spent in the engine’s “sweet spot,” where it delivers better fuel economy.

Park discusses how the Vehicle Acceleration Management (VAM) feature on the Cummins engine helps deliver consistent and efficient acceleration from the vehicle’s launch. He noted that “this transmission proved to be the smoothest-shifting Eaton automated [transmission] I’ve ever driven. I don’t think it ever exceeded 1300 rpm under normal, unhurried acceleration.”
