Driver Tips for 2013 Engines

In 2013, all on-highway Cummins engines will include On-Board Diagnostics – a proven system that Cummins has been using since 2007. With On-Board Diagnostics, your customers will see a new Malfunction Indicator Lamp on the dashboard of their 2013 truck. They can find more information about this lamp in our 2013 Driver Tips Card. The Driver Tips Card also includes reminders of current lamps and the correct actions for drivers to take when the lamps are illuminated.

Lamp Functions

Check Engine Lamp – Amber lamp indicates that service is needed at the first opportunity.
Stop Engine Lamp – The vehicle should be stopped as soon as it is safe to do so.
Malfunction Indicator Lamp – New with On-Board Diagnostics; illuminates when there is a fault to the emissions system.
Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Lamp – May vary from being illuminated to flashing to appearing together with the Check Engine Lamp as the level of DEF drops below a critical level.
High Exhaust System Temperature Lamp – Illuminates when an aftertreatment regeneration is taking place and exhaust system temperatures are still elevated.
Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Lamp – Progresses from being illuminated all the time to flashing to flashing in conjunction with the Check Engine Lamp. When you see this, the DPF needs regeneration immediately. Engine power will be reduced automatically. A parked regeneration is required.

The Driver Tips Card includes a basic overview of the On-Board Diagnostics system and the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system, and information about when and how to use the Regeneration Inhibit Switch, how to perform a parked (stationary) regeneration and the maintenance needed for fuel, oil and aftertreatment systems. The Driver Tips Card also includes advice on how to maximize fuel efficiency through proper driving habits.

This valuable guide is available for you to give customers with every 2013 truck you sell. You can order literature via your Cummins distributor. The 2013 Driver Tips card can also be accessed on the Driver Training page at
